World War I began in 1914 and lasted for 4 years. 135 countries took part in this 'Great War' and more than 15,000000 people died. A majority of the fighting took place in Europe, on the Western Front (where the Germans and the Allies fought.) The trenches in World War I marked the area of the Western front. This was where trench warfare took place, as many soldiers lived down in the dirty trenches, risking their lives for their countries. The trenches were deep ditches that ran along 475 miles in an S Shape from the Northern Sea all the way to Switzerland, they were dug out 2 meters by 2 meters and were occupied by soldiers who lived in theses trenches for years.
The Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F) was an Australian army that was formed on August 15th 1914 following the declaration of war against Germany. The AIF had many experiences on the Western Front and were involved in numerous wars on the western front. For the Australian Imperial Force there had been few good times during their time in the Western front, they were exposed to diseases, bad living conditions and were often caught up in the wars.
